It always fascinates me when a potential client calls and ask if I hypnotize people who want to stop smoking. This is probably the number one reason that people consult a hypnotist.
I explain that more people stop smoking with hypnosis then with any other method.
After I explain that the program is four hours over a period of two weeks and how much it will cost, as well as answering any other questions, we settle on a time to meet.
How it works
The first session starts with a very intense question and answer period:
- “On a scale of one to ten how much do you want to stop smoking?”
- “How long have you been smoking?”
- “How many packs a day?”
- Have you ever tried to stop smoking before?”
- “How? And why did you go back?”
The goal is to find out as much as possible regarding your past history. Then I start asking questions, such as…
- “What does smoking mean to you?”
- “Who else smokes in your household?” and many more questions.
My favorite is “How much does a pack of cigarettes cost now?” We can then figure out exactly how much you spend per month on cigarettes and point out that it is much cheaper to see me than to continue smoking.
Smoking cessation and weight gain
Many people gain weight after they stop smoking, and this is always a worry.
To allay your fears I will share with you the following story as to how I will help prevent you from gaining weight.
When the tobacco leaves are taken in from the fields in the fall they are filthy with bugs, dirt and anything else that has floated in the air. They are then washed in huge water vats. Because nicotine is so bitter, sugar is added to the water and the tobacco leaves than absorb the sugar. When you become addicted to nicotine you also become addicted to sugar. The sugar addition is kept under control until the person stops smoking and then the person starts craving sugar, (candy, cookies, cake, pies and the list goes on).
When I hypnotize clients to stop smoking I always also say they will not substitute sugars for cigarettes but they will crave water instead. After all, water is safe and useful as drinking water helps to wash out the nicotine from your body.
When I hypnotize the client I reinforce all the good reasons to be smoke free.
I mention the specific things the client has told me as to why he/she wanted to stop smoking, and many additional positive ideas and suggestions. The client leaves with a CD of the entire session.
The first session is two hours long.
The second session is two days later when I again hypnotize and reinforce all the good things about being a non-smoker. A week or two later the client returns for the final session which is a ‘Stress Management’ session. People usually go back to smoking when they are under stress so I want to give positive suggestions to them prior to experiencing stress.
